spending the night in a different bed XL
Quilted linen and canvas, pine and brass brad frame
In this ongoing series from multidisciplinary artist Ethan Caflisch, the artist hearkens back to his time in art school when he first started stretching his own canvases — always thinking like a sculptor, and saving the valuable scraps of unused canvas and linen. In the early pieces from the series, Caflisch simply used those not-discarded pieces of material, sewed them together to make them whole again, and applied a bit of sectionalized paint. Later in the series’ development, Caflisch began to introduce non-scrap, intentionally-cut canvas and linen to create purely abstract compositional and color theory pieces from linen, canvas, and sometimes pine and brass.

“...still constantly remind myself of H.D. Thoreau’s quote “rather than love, than money, than fame; give me truth.” I think this is a crucial mentality to have as an artist, and any other profession; that success, by any definition, will be found in making honest work.”

EVA CHEN ON ETHAN CAFLISCH
“...WE WERE REALLY LOOKING FOR PIECES THAT SPOKE TO US AND MADE US PAUSE FOR A MOMENT TO ABSORB, APPRECIATE, AND REFLECT. CAFLISCH'S ART ABSOLUTELY HAD THAT EFFECT ON US.”
