Billy Bass
Colored pencil on toned paper
Laura Burke's small, evocative drawings reveal the poetic beauty hidden in the ordinary. With a delicate touch and keen observation, she captures the quiet magic of everyday objects and intimate interior spaces, transforming them into moments of stillness and wonder. Each piece invites you to pause and appreciate the gentle rhythms of daily life through her unique perspective.
In Burke's words:
The Home Series was made at my drafting table, in the middle of my living room. After 32 years of hand-me-downs and curbside acquisitions, I finally invested in a real drafting table. What seemed like a minor shift in the orientation of my home proved, to be a lynchpin. Suddenly my apartment became a place of revery, rather than liminal space. With this newfound appreciation, I wanted to draw a series that basked in the potential of beautiful household moments. The subject matter is in keeping with past work (my love of flowers and fruit is unflinching), but with the addition of fairy creatures inhabiting the home. Each piece is a snapshot of beautiful chaos or satisfying indulgence, turning daily actives into magic.

“I view the objects I draw as characters in a scene that the viewer is seeing by accident. They’re lovers and friends, playing out intimate moments that I hope can be related to.”
