Ritual of Dawn
Clay, Pigment, Acrylic, Charcoal, and Oil on Canvas
Ali Beletic’s large-scale abstract paintings hum with the kinetic energy of a practiced musician—each gesture on the canvas an extension of rhythm, instinct, and improvisation. Drawing on her background in music and her lived experience in the American West, Beletic evolves the tradition of American Abstract Expressionism into a distinctly western visual language. Her work blends the raw emotional force of gesture painting with cultural markers of the outsider: the rebel, the nomad, the intuitive spirit moving in sync with both nature and culture.
In her Neon Primitivism series, Beletic leans into a material and conceptual vocabulary rooted in primitivism, sensuality, and the elemental. These paintings celebrate the canvas as a site of ritual and release, fusing matte textures from signature clays and ancient pigments—botanical dyes, crushed stones, and burned wood—with contemporary media like spray paint and oil. The resulting surfaces evoke everything from ceremonial body paint and cave walls to the weathered terrain of the desert and the lyrical chaos of New York School abstraction. Simultaneously archaic and modern, her works vibrate with a sense of wild coherence—bridging eras, geographies, and states of being.

“I feel like all of my work not only has this grounding in earth and humanity, but also in a sense of party, celebration, and vibrancy.”

About the Artist
Ali Beletic
Ali Beletic’s multidisciplinary practice spans large-scale painting, experiential sculpture, and immersive installation. In both formal experimentation and elemental ritual, her work invites viewers into an expansive dialogue between the modern self and a more primal, ancestral sense of being. Through a pluralistic lens, Beletic weaves together materials like clay, spray paint, soapstone, and fire, creating spaces where ancient traditions, contemporary art histories, and cultural movements coexist. From post-minimalist rain catchments in the desert to ceremonial parties scored by hidden drummers, her projects activate the natural world as both collaborator and stage. Beletic's practice has garnered recognition from Vogue, Ignant, NPR, VICE, The Cut, and Architectural Digest and can be found in the collections of Eva Chen, Robia Rashid and Michael Oppenhuizen.
At the heart of Beletic’s work is a desire to reconcile dualities: the ancient and the futuristic, intellect and intuition, stillness and celebration. Her light-based installations offer contemplative spaces for reflection, expanding awareness and evoking the vastness of the cosmos. Influenced by ideas like those in The Lexus and the Olive Tree, Beletic’s work champions a worldview that honors both the archaic and the advanced, using art as a medium to hold complexity, embrace multiplicity, and create moments of both presence and transcendence.
