DESCRIPTION

Oil pastel, Chinese ink, watercolor and acrylic on Yupo paper | 2021

The series The Unofficial History Of Tomorrow examines social landscape and inherited trauma through the lens of painting tradition, street photography, myth, food, and sci-fi. The paintings employ playfulness and abstraction to reveal the pain and destruction of daily life, while also recognizing the beauty and dignity of the marginalized. They also explore the notion of “Asianess” in art.

The artist examines what heritage means alongside the inherent power attached to traditional systems. These paintings seek to dismantle both the assimilation and the typecasting of Asian diasporic art in the west. She is interested in the underside — of patriarchy, of racial patronizing, of looking beyond the model minority obfuscation to bring the little-known to the surface. Not interested in easy answers, again and again she evokes the dialectic of weakness and care, of silence and strength, of myth and reality.
