Oil paint on canvas
In her latest series, Brianna Lance deepens her exploration of the surreal with a cast of recurring motifs that evoke both enchantment and unease. Orchids—delicate yet provocative—take center stage once again, not merely as flora but as emblems of sensual tension and aesthetic extremity. Around them orbit a dreamlike constellation of ripe fruit, braided hair, moths, butterflies, and vigilant hounds. These symbols, traditionally coded as feminine or natural, become instruments of psychic theater: visual cues that hint at myth, ritual, and subconscious desire.
Rendered in Lance’s unmistakable style—lush yet controlled, surreal yet emotionally exacting—each painting becomes a tableau suspended between seduction and omen. Moths flutter near inextinguishable flames, braids coil like symbols of memory or continuity, and fruit teeters at the edge of decay. The hounds, poised and alert, seem both guardian and guide, silently observing the strange rituals unfolding within the frame. These compositions resist resolution. Instead, they linger in a charged atmosphere of symbolic friction, where beauty beckons and danger waits just beyond the bloom. With this series, Lance offers a surrealism that is as cerebral as it is instinctual—a world where the unconscious is always flowering.

“I have a very hard time expressing myself in words, so creating work is a way for me to truly and freely express myself. It’s the one time I feel capable of saying exactly what I mean.”

MARIANA VELASQUEZ ON BRIANNA LANCE
“I am obsessed with figurative lips and eyes. They are elements that have always fascinated me from Dadaism with its playfulness. This painting by Brianna Lance is actually made with watercolor and LIPSTICK - which I connect to in so many ways. As I always say, "when in doubt, red wine, red lips & roast a chicken"."
