Fifth Wheel
DESCRIPTION
Archival ink on museum-quality cotton rag paper | 2021
Continuing to conjure up imaginary still lifes of configurations of adored objects, Burke flattens her subject matter for a full display, drawn from a bird’s eye view. Through imagining emptying her pockets onto a table and sorting through the contents, or witnessing inanimate objects caught off guard, she invites the viewer to be a bystander seeing into a surreal, romantic world. This series, Table Arrangements, draws inspiration from post-impressionist painter Pierre Bonnard whose later works transform mundane scenes into fantastical arrangements.

“I view the objects I draw as characters in a scene that the viewer is seeing by accident. They’re lovers and friends, playing out intimate moments that I hope can be related to.”
