Color Play #69

Sale price$ 500

Original Collage

Color Play, a continued series by Michael DeSutter, was originally conceived as a means to focus on specific elements the artist employs in order to convey movement in his works. Previously, when diving into this process, DeSutter became enamored with color, and as a result, started exploring the idea of color progression as a visual tool for expressing movement.

While working on the series, DeSutter was asked, “What do you think about Color Theory?” The artist realized through his work that oftentimes he needed to ignore the preconceived rulesets on color and create his own. Through revisiting Color Play, the artist discovered that traditional complementary colors felt established and loaded, often lacking the intrigue he sought, yet some color pairings in DeSutter's work aligned with colors on the same side of the color wheel.

In DeSutter's own words, “Sometimes the best way to understand something is to deconstruct it and look at its parts. With this series, the artist has done just that, allowing individual movement pieces to stand on their own and inviting viewers to appreciate the beauty in each.”

“From a distance, this piece feels quite simple and straightforward. But when you look up close, it's a complex and really engaging work that has a lot of layers to it.”
