DESCRIPTION

Quilted hessian, velvet, canvas, birch and brass brad frame | 2020

This series of textile works, the country i come from, uses various types of fabric to create flattened, minimalist landscapes, inspired by Caflisch’s upbringing in the midwest. The sewn seam between the bold colors creates a horizon line, simplifying the viewer’s perspective into distinct planes. The works also explore color theory and abstraction, inviting the viewer to fill in the blanks about the vista upon which they gaze.

“...still constantly remind myself of H.D. Thoreau’s quote “rather than love, than money, than fame; give me truth.” I think this is a crucial mentality to have as an artist, and any other profession; that success, by any definition, will be found in making honest work.”
