Untitled
Watercolor on paper
In her Waves series, Brianna Lance delves into the serene, rhythmic experience of meditation, capturing the sensation of floating between realms—physical and metaphysical. Lance likens this state to being cradled by the ocean’s undulating surface, the gentle rise and fall of the water reflecting the ebb and flow of the mind during deep meditation. It’s from this nuanced connection that Waves emerges, a collection of works imbued with a tranquil yet dynamic energy.
Lance’s creative process itself mirrors meditation—methodical and repetitive—each wave she paints becoming a testament to the mindfulness required in her craft. With watercolors, she continues to expand this series, introducing the sky as a counterpart to the sea. The sun, reduced to its most minimal, hovers above like a calm sentinel, while clouds with hidden faces drift through the compositions, adding a quiet, dreamlike quality. The interplay between these elements feels effortless, yet deeply intentional, creating a sense of harmony that transcends the visual. Like the ocean itself, Waves pulls the viewer into its depths, inviting reflection in the same slow, steady cadence that inspired its creation.
In the artist's words:
These pieces are in direct correlation with my spiritual practice. I create to honor the communion with forces higher than myself. In the practice of that I desire to develop a community with all of the people that view, collect and experience it. I wanted to make pieces that were a direct act of service to the collector, providing them with love, protection, and hopefully prosperity in their lives. The energy becomes more direct because the intention is there in the act of creation. The blessing provided to me in the act of making can go on and be transferred to who has the painting next.

“I have a very hard time expressing myself in words, so creating work is a way for me to truly and freely express myself. It’s the one time I feel capable of saying exactly what I mean.”

MARIANA VELASQUEZ ON BRIANNA LANCE
“I am obsessed with figurative lips and eyes. They are elements that have always fascinated me from Dadaism with its playfulness. This painting by Brianna Lance is actually made with watercolor and LIPSTICK - which I connect to in so many ways. As I always say, "when in doubt, red wine, red lips & roast a chicken"."
