Three Marks of Existence II
DESCRIPTION
Archival ink on 15g handmade Nepali Lhakpa paper | 2023
This second iteration of Brian Merriam’s “3 Marks of Existence” series features a photographic triptych of the Himalayas. The work and its title are inspired by the Buddhist concepts of anicca (impermanence), anatta (absence of self), and dukkha (suffering), which together comprise the three marks of existence.
Reflecting on the series, Merriam writes: “The Himalayan peaks pictured in the piece act as physical representations of these concepts—they’re distant, immense, and foreboding yet alluring. An existence all but unknowable lies beyond. The outward physical journey mirrors the inward spiritual path.”

20 x 30 inches each
FRAMED DIMENSIONS
Floated: 34.75 x 66.25 x 2 inches each
AUTHENTICATION
The work comes with a Certification of Authenticity signed and numbered by the Co-Founder of Tappan
