DESCRIPTION
Oil pastel and colored pencil on paper | 2021
Let Laura Burke’s new series of surreal still lifes transport you to faraway landscapes and skylines — or ones just outside the door. Wishful Thinking tangles the threshold between outdoors and indoors, compressing time and space so that moments in a forest can now magically occupy your living room. Growing up in Portland, Oregon, Burke was always within sight of a cluster of trees. A move to New York City meant trading the solitude and peace she found in the forest with the endless opportunities the city offers. Still, she found herself missing that green landscape of her youth. Rendered in oil pastel and colored pencil on paper, the series is an embodiment of wishful thinking, and offers the artist and viewer alike the chance to have it all — crowds, people, solitude, trees, a throw rug, and a garden — all at once.

“I view the objects I draw as characters in a scene that the viewer is seeing by accident. They’re lovers and friends, playing out intimate moments that I hope can be related to.”
