Past Life
Acrylic on Raw Canvas
In creating her new capsule series, Mimicry, Marleigh Culver found herself drawn to many of the same colors and gestures as are found in other recent works. There’s both comfort and challenge in repetition, as Culver was called to what brings her comfort and what lies in her inner world. In the tension between loose, gestural pieces and those that are mirrored, Culver sees the past year of her life — one of new extremes and double-takes of familiarity. Drawn to different directions at the same time, Culver embraces that contrast in her works, and in herself.

“...remain true to myself. To make work that is undeniably me and uniquely my own. I hope to make things that move people, but if I make work just for others without putting myself in it, it won’t carry.”

JANELLE LLOYD ON MARLEIGH CULVER
“Marleigh Culver is a favorite artist of mine that Tappan features. I loved the name of this piece for my daughter’s eventual bedroom. It’s the question I ask myself pretty much every day when I look at her.”
