Q&A:
Why would you recommend Tappan to someone looking for art?
The simple answer is Tappan is my absolute favorite gallery in LA. I have been following for a while now and as soon as I got my own place, which I finally did, I knew I needed a piece for my home!
What inspires you to collect the work of emerging artists?
I’m inspired to collect art from emerging artists because I love watching the evolution of their work and supporting new concepts. There’s something special about seeing an artist’s journey unfold and being part of it in a meaningful way.
What is your earliest memory of art, and what led you to start collecting it?
My earliest memory of art comes from my grandmother, who was a painter. She loved taking me to museums, and some of my favorite moments with her were spontaneous—like going to Woodstock and visiting her friends’ studios or her taking me to museums in Hungary. I was fascinated by the brushes, the canvases, the whole creative process. Art has always been a part of my life, but I’m only just beginning my journey as a collector and I hope to be as tasteful as my grandmother was.
How has the sentimentality of your collection evolved over time?
At first, I was drawn to pieces that simply looked good together, that matched in a more curated way. Now, my approach is shifting—I’m collecting pieces that aren’t necessarily the safest choices but ones I truly love and want to see every day, it’s for me not to appease.
Is there a particular type of art you collect?
I don’t focus on a particular style, but I have a deep appreciation for impressionism and post-impressionism. That said, I stay open to all kinds of work and am learning more and more everyday!
Where and when do you feel the most creative?
I feel most creative at night and when I’m traveling in Europe.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Inspiration finds me in unexpected places—from a restaurant to a museum to a plane ride.
Describe your dream collection in three words.
If I had to describe my dream collection in three words, it would be impressionist, transitional, innovative. It would include artists like William Glackens and John Marin, alongside fresh, boundary-pushing names like Paula Raubino, Ashley Longshore, and Ryan McGinness.
