STATEMENT
"Architectural structures are fixed, and by nature, semi-permanent. Its opposite—collapsible, movable, pliable—can be found in textiles. By contrast, these mediums are disparate, but in comparison, the two share certain commonalities: the power to define space, create shelter, and lend privacy.
While my background is in weaving, I see myself as a builder. I use cloth construction as a fundamental foundation, a center I return to, again and again. Lines of thread laid through a warp mirror mirror geometric shapes in the construction of physical space. Through a pallet of building materials like concrete, metal, drywall, and glass, I explore the tension between the fluid and the rigid, pairing concrete, metal, drywall, or glass alongside in contrast to textiles. What results is the exposure of each medium’s instabilities. The presumption of fabric as “delicate” and structures as “stable” are questioned, explored, and reestablished. These gestures then allow the viewer to confront their own understanding of everyday utility in context and contrast." - Crystal Gregory
