’The Gardening Drawing Club’ is an ongoing project and series of paintings that draw direct visual inspiration from scenes Johanna observed in workshops by The Gardening Drawing Club. A nomadic community project offering adults and children in Britain free access to arts and horticulture, The Gardening Drawing Club was founded by Johanna in 2021. Over 700 participated in the art project between April 2022 and April 2023. It was hosted by various locations across England, including prestigious art institutions such as Camden Art Centre and Henry Moore Studios and Gardens, community gardens and plant nurseries.

“Contemporary cultures are often extremely fast and ever-changing. My practice engages with slower tasks which demand commitment and help us to focus our attention. In my paintings, I depict activities such as growing plants and preparing and sharing tea, which also are parts of my daily life.”
