In the new series, The Waiting Field, Celia Lees turns her attention to a state of suspension—an unfamiliar and uneasy condition defined not by action, but by the experience of waiting. The series examines the charged interval before a decisive shift, where momentum slows and outcomes remain uncertain. Rather than focusing on resolution, the works inhabit the space between, where movement forward depends not on individual certainty but on a shared sense of timing and mutual adjustment.
Within these compositions, forms emerge through a quiet trust in process—trust in the medium, in timing, and in the evolving rhythm of creation. The spaces between forms become active and expressive, holding tension, possibility, and the weight of what has yet to unfold. Through this sustained attention to uncertainty, The Waiting Field reflects on identity within moments when control is relinquished and momentum is collective.

About the Artist
Celia Lees
Celia Lees (b. 1996) is a Toronto-based abstract artist whose work is a visceral exploration of lived experience, memory, and the passage of time. Through large-scale, expressive paintings, she channels the emotional resonance of human connection, the fleeting currents of everyday life, and the textures of memory into vibrant, intuitive compositions. Rooted in the physicality of mark-making, her practice allows movement, emotion, and instinct to guide each gesture, offering viewers space to reflect, linger, and encounter the quiet intimacy of shared experience.
Lees' holds a Bachelor of Design from Toronto Metropolitan University and worked in the fashion industry prior to her career in art, experiences that continue to inform her sensitivity to materiality, texture, and color.
Lees' work is held in private collections across North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, and has been placed in prominent commercial spaces including 200 Amsterdam in New York, Aria in Las Vegas, and The Laurel in West Palm Beach.
