Michael DeSutter’s collages are playful, precise studies in color, form, and the quiet power of what’s left unsaid. Working with hand-cut shapes, DeSutter builds compositions that feel both spontaneous and intentional—balancing vibrant fields of color against expanses of negative space. It’s in these open areas that the work breathes, inviting the viewer to consider how absence shapes presence. Each collage becomes a conversation between solid and void, edge and interruption, where even the quietest moments hold compositional weight. In DeSutter’s hands, abstraction becomes an active practice in restraint, rhythm, and visual clarity.

DeSutter practices includes considering the overlooked within old magazines, he uses these records of the past to consider and recontextualize the future.
