Julia
Oil on canvas
Lola Erhart's paintings explore the quiet intimacy of human connection, using the figure as a point of departure to examine presence, memory, and the emotional weight of everyday life. Drawing inspiration from those closest to her, she captures fleeting gestures and moments of tenderness that reveal the beauty found in ordinary domestic experiences. Erhart's work embraces the tension between representation and abstraction, where figures emerge, dissolve, and reappear as reflections of memory's shifting nature.
Working in layered oil paint, Erhart builds and erodes each surface through a process of accumulation and removal, allowing traces of earlier compositions to remain visible beneath the final image. Whether intimate in scale or monumental in form, the paintings invite quiet contemplation, honoring the subtle gestures, shared moments, and enduring emotional resonance that often exist beyond language.

“What I look for when I'm doing a portrait is to capture the presence of the person I’m portraying. I believe that the viewer can come to feel the presence of the portrayed person by observing their eyes and their gaze. I feel that living surrounded by mountains has had a subtle but powerful effect on my painting.”
