DESCRIPTION
Acrylic and gouache on wood board and exposed stretchers | 2021
This is a piece I made in my London studio. Using what I thought about and learned in Portugal, I built the same structures to hold a vital symbol of the finish line. It’s iterative, like lots of my work, and formalist. Oftentimes, there’s a process of switch and swap via sketch to see what happens; and if it works - it gets made. This time around, that process of looking for certainty didn’t work for the vast majority of the series - but it did for this piece.

“...still constantly remind myself of H.D. Thoreau’s quote “rather than love, than money, than fame; give me truth.” I think this is a crucial mentality to have as an artist, and any other profession; that success, by any definition, will be found in making honest work.”

EVA CHEN ON ETHAN CAFLISCH
“...WE WERE REALLY LOOKING FOR PIECES THAT SPOKE TO US AND MADE US PAUSE FOR A MOMENT TO ABSORB, APPRECIATE, AND REFLECT. CAFLISCH'S ART ABSOLUTELY HAD THAT EFFECT ON US.”
