Jujube
DESCRIPTION
Oil painting on found paper | 2019
The oil paintings comprising the series Stork and The Scent of the Jujube have been created to accompany Johanna Tagata Hoffbeck’s eponymous debut novel, first published by Å Journal in 2019. An excerpt from the novel follows.
“In France she observed people kissing one another on their cheeks to say hello, and again half an hour later to say goodbye. She had taken to picturing French people’s memories as a library of scents, concluding that perhaps it was not simply kisses, but fragrances that were offered to one another.”

“Contemporary cultures are often extremely fast and ever-changing. My practice engages with slower tasks which demand commitment and help us to focus our attention. In my paintings, I depict activities such as growing plants and preparing and sharing tea, which also are parts of my daily life.”
