(Puerto) Burden + Indulgence
Pigment transfer on canvas
In this series, Jeff Kraus examines the fluid nature of memory and perception through a fusion of photographic transfer and digital mark-making. Fragments of landscapes and architecture are embedded into layered surfaces of paper, silk, and canvas, creating compositions that hover between the familiar and the abstract. The resulting images feel both immediate and eroded, echoing the instability of recollection and the way places linger in the mind as shifting impressions rather than fixed records.
Kraus’ interplay of digital and physical gestures deepens this sense of transience. Pigmented transfers dissolve into textured grounds while digital marks reassert presence, forming spaces that seem to appear and fade simultaneously. The series invites viewers into a world suspended between presence and disappearance, where the act of remembering becomes an active, transformative process.

“Mistakes often become the final piece. I like to be surprised in the studio. Old works inform new works, along with failed attempts and piles of trashed material.”
