An Island of Fire in a Sea of Milk 1
Archival ink on museum-quality cotton rag paper
In An Island of Fire in a Sea of Milk (AIOFIASOM), Brian Merriam photographs a volcanic landscape in a state of perpetual transformation. Active volcanoes, scorched ground, and lush canopy reveal a fragile balance between destruction and renewal, where ash feeds new growth and land is continuously remade. Infused with mythic and temporal undertones, the work reflects on impermanence, resilience, and humanity’s smallness within an ancient, ongoing rhythm of creation.
In Merriam's words:
"An ancient place. A chain of forty-five living volcanoes form its spine. I walk amongst them as they bleed forth new land. What was once, now subsumed. The firmament of future generations smolders all around. A thick, verdant canopy covers all that doesn't burn, fed heartily by the ash of all that does. Creation and destruction surround me, locked in an ancient harmonic rhythm. Semar stands guard and smiles as the sun sinks slowly into a glowing sea of milk. Another day passes on this island of fire."
