Roots N.5
Clay
Roots is a new ceramic sculpture series by Chala Toprak that explores the intimate relationship between identity, ancestry, and the spiritual forces that connect all living beings. Emerging from personal memory and a deep reverence for nature, the works evoke the symbolic language of roots as sources of grounding, healing, and belonging. Each sculpture carries an organic presence, reflecting both feminine strength and the quiet generative power found within natural systems.
Working with clay as both material and metaphor, Toprak transforms earth into a vessel for touch, memory, and renewal. The flowing forms embody a balance between tenderness and resilience, suggesting the interconnectedness of body and landscape, spirit and matter. Through textured surfaces shaped by time and vulnerability, the sculptures become meditations on transformation and the unseen energies that guide human experience. Roots invites viewers into a contemplative space that honors humanity’s enduring connection to the earth and the restorative power of returning to what grounds us.

About the Artist
Chala Toprak
Starting out as a fashion designer in her hometown of Istanbul, Chala Toprak, swapped out one metropolis for another and found a home in Brooklyn in 2019, where she first started working with clay. Toprak soon found solace at the pottery wheel and what began as a hobby quickly developed into a full-time pursuit.
