In Incandescente, Mariana Arias draws from the arid, high-altitude landscapes of the Puna de Atacama, where the Andes, mineral formations, and vast expanses of silence reveal a terrain shaped by geological time. The series considers the earth as a site of latent energy, where rock, salt, and mineral hold the memory of fire and transformation. Arias approaches this landscape not as a static subject, but as a living system marked by pressure, erosion, heat, and renewal. Each painting becomes a kind of mineral body, with surfaces that crack, sediment, and accumulate in ways that echo the layered history of the land itself.

Throughout the series, color functions less as representation than as a register of temperature and elemental force. Burning ochres, volcanic blacks, salt whites, and luminous flashes emerge across textured surfaces, suggesting heat beneath the earth’s crust and the shifting light of the distant landscape. Through these material and chromatic tensions, Arias explores the beauty of what remains active beneath apparent stillness—the pressure, fracture, and contained energy that precede metamorphosis. Incandescente ultimately presents each work as a fragment of sensitive geology, suspended between vulnerability and strength, stillness and movement.
