Country Hillside, Scotland
Acrylic on canvas
Emily Tingey’s latest body of work returns to nature as both a source of inspiration and a reflection of the evolving self. Moving between varying degrees of clarity and abstraction, the paintings explore the tension between hoping for more and accepting what is, finding beauty within imperfection and embracing the many versions of oneself that emerge over time. Several works revisit landscapes Tingey has encountered before, allowing familiar scenery to be reconsidered through the perspective of the present, while others resolve compositions she has returned to repeatedly over the course of her practice.
Inspired by Mary Cassatt’s balance of precise and expansive brushwork and Joan Mitchell’s expressive freedom, Tingey brings together techniques that have been tested, abandoned, and rediscovered over time. This process of returning becomes integral to the work itself, mirroring the cycles and irregularities found throughout the natural world. Through layered gestures and shifting levels of detail, Tingey approaches nature as a space for reflection, renewal, and self-acceptance — one that embraces uncertainty and imperfection as essential parts of becoming.
