Carefree Beauty
Oil on cotton canvas
In Midnight Fears, Morning Dreams, Emma Ortiz explores the shifting emotional landscape between nighttime rumination and the renewed perspective of morning. The series began during late summer evenings spent drawing in her sketchbook, using color, mark-making, and line as a means of processing personal anxieties and the uncertainties of the world around her. These intuitive nighttime sessions became a space for reflection and release, translating thoughts and fears into an evolving visual language of color, pattern, and gesture.
By morning, the emotional weight of the previous evening had often receded. Returning to her sketchbook, Ortiz encountered not the anxieties that initiated the drawings, but florals, doves, patterns, and unexpected moments of beauty shaped by intuition and imagination. The twelve paintings that comprise Midnight Fears, Morning Dreams emerged directly from these sessions, carrying elements of both the drawings and the dreams that followed them. Through the series, Ortiz considers the restorative nature of sleep and the possibility of transformation — how fear can soften, perspective can shift, and uncertainty can give way to renewed clarity and hope.
