Breathing Through the Fog 14
Acrylic on unprimed canvas
Breathing Through the Fog is a new series by Emily Tingey that explores the space between recognizing beauty and having the emotional capacity to fully receive it. Rooted in moments of uncertainty, haze, and quiet recovery, the works reflect the experience of finding grounding through small, fleeting encounters with the natural world — the ripple of a pond, a single flower, or a landscape reduced to its most essential forms and colors. Through softened imagery and simplified compositions, Tingey examines how moments of beauty can function as small breaths within emotional fog, offering subtle pathways back to presence, joy, and self-recognition.
Drawing inspiration from fog-covered landscapes, blurred natural forms, and the contained environments of greenhouses, the series navigates themes of protection, transformation, and release. The works suggest a tension between the desire for safety within controlled spaces and the eventual need to outgrow those boundaries in pursuit of openness and freedom. Balancing minimalism with atmosphere, Tingey creates paintings that feel both intimate and expansive, capturing the delicate process of moving through uncertainty toward clarity and renewal.
