Philip Soucy grounds his work in the accumulation of lived experiences, creating new forms through the process of repetition and layering. Exploring coil building out of clay as a method to explore pace and time, Soucy revels in the symbiosis that emerges between the clay layers as each piece is built, using touch to imprint the ineffable bond between material and maker. “Once the layering of coils begins,” he explains, “the dance begins.” The resulting work is a true collaboration between Soucy and the clay as he allows the clay to layer upon itself as naturally as possible. The forms that emerge speak of landscape, hillsides or mountain facades, but largely evoking the layers of sediment that have occurred across the eons of creation.
