Plum Drift
Acrylic and pastel on canvas
Christine Kwon’s recent paintings mark a quieter evolution in her practice, shifting from fragmented imagery and symbolic forms toward a deeper exploration of color, light, and atmosphere. Built through translucent layers of acrylic, each surface develops gradually as pigment accumulates and light moves through and reflects between layers. Organic lines and geometric forms occasionally provide structure, while in other works, color itself becomes the composition, with subtle gradients creating a sense of depth, movement, and luminosity.
While Kwon’s work remains rooted in memory, she increasingly approaches it through sensation rather than representation. She considers how color, light, and spatial relationships can evoke elusive emotional states—moments of stillness, distance, longing, and recognition. Through an intuitive and contemplative process, forms emerge and dissolve into fields of color, mirroring memory’s movement between clarity and ambiguity. The resulting works invite perception to slow, allowing viewers to bring their own memories and associations to the experience of the painting.

"I work at the threshold of visibility, where layered surfaces hold traces of memory, and absence becomes its own form of presence."
About the Artist
Christine Kwon
Christine Kwon is a Korean American artist based in New York and Miami. Her practice focuses on layered abstract painting that explores memory and inherited experience rooted in her mother’s childhood memories in Korea. Drawing from a background in interior design, she integrates structural sensitivity with intuitive gesture through translucent acrylic layers, organic forms, and mixed media interventions. Her work engages an ongoing dialogue between Korean and American identities, as well as between memory and contemporary abstraction.
Kwon holds a BFA in Interior Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and dual master's degrees in Sustainability and Real Estate Development from the Fashion Institute of Technology and the University of Miami.
