Alice Neave (b. 1988, London, UK) lives and works in London in her studio on edge of the river Thames. After studying at the Arts Institute, Bournemouth and then completing a fine art BA at the University of Leeds in 2010 Neave has participated in several group and solo shows. Solos include those at Public Gallery & Blue Shop Galleries in London. Recent selected groups include James Cohan in New York and Arusha Gallery in London. Neave is also a Turps Banana Course alumni & was shortlisted for the Royal Watercolour Society prize in 2022 and The Lido Open 2024.

ABOUT
Neave works through a multi-layered compositional process. She often begins with monoprinting, painting onto a slick substrate before pressing unstretched fabric on top, embracing the unpredictability of the imprint. The works therefore have their basis in the remnants of mark-making, in the uncertain transferral of gestures across media and materials. Neave then adds further marks to the print, using a combination of pigments, inks, dyes, and mixed media to achieve a range of textures and viscosities. By working on unstretched thin cotton, calico, or found fabric, the painted surface becomes a material in its own right, offering a physical connection through its softness and malleability in the hands. Neave often cuts up these pieces and stitches them together in new combinations, creating unexpected juxtapositions and alignments before finally stretching them. This process of cutting and collaging, of separating and re-joining, requires resilience and imagination. The artist works the delicate canvases with respect but without undue reverence, formulating sensitive compositions that continue to be uncertain until they are fully realised.
