DESCRIPTION

Found paper, dyed vellum, thread, silk chiffon, film negatives | 2020

Drewniak’s new series of mixed media works, Toward the Light, utilizes discarded and found materials such as paper remnants, fabric scraps, and film negatives to explore color, texture, and movement. These materials are deconstructed and then sewn back together, combining to form organic shapes inspired by movement and attraction. These works specifically draw parallels between human interaction and phototropism — a plant's movement and growth in response to light. Due to isolation as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Drewniak focused these works on what connects and lures us toward each other, and how a singular organism is internally structured to grow and change using external surroundings. She observes, “We can still grow while being forced to stay in one place.”
