Versos 10-03-04
Archival ink on museum-quality cotton rag paper
A chance meeting with a book inspired Versos, a new collage series by artist Leigh Wells. After reading the Japanese book documenting the work of a prolific Ikebana artist, Wells set to work within a strict framework, taking each photographic book page and combining it with one or more other pages to create compositions of spatial ambiguity and illusion. Spontaneous and highly controlled—like much of her work—this group showcases these contrasting qualities, producing superb compositions that are both thought provoking and visually stimulating.

“I approach the combination of elements in my work as though I am constructing a feeling, a thought, a relationship—intentionally creating spatial and narrative ambiguity that heightens the work’s expressive tension.”

BOBBY BERK ON LEIGH WELLS
“I'm really drawn to this Visage series because it's such a unique take on portraits. It's taking parts of the face and breaking them apart through mixed media, and I really love all of the works.”
