“Soft Floods” is a series of nature-inspired works by Astri Styrkestad Haukaas. Using acrylic ink, oil paint, and spray paint, she creates organic, abstract compositions reminiscent of the natural world. Poetically musing on the series, Haukaas writes:
nature rushed to fill the void
My mother is a stone now
Her existence and presence dependent on me
That is okay- my existence was dependent on her for so long
She is just like the rocks I carry
Hold them in my hand and warm them up
Put them down and pick them up again
running water,
filling in the cracks of a stone
A space that separates
yet proves our connection
Powerful,
Soft flood
makes everything come loose
Tearing up soil
rolling down
With her playful, violent hand
stripped naked,
I look at the world around me
and the stones I carry
