Bella McGoldrick’s photorealistic still lifes capture artifacts of the everyday. She meticulously draws pre-adored, used, and discarded objects, instilling them with a sense of curiosity and sentimentality. In “The Sometimes Kitchen Essentials” series, McGoldrick illustrates a collection of pantry items with captivating packaging: baking soda from Russia, olive oil from London, and sardines from Portugal.

Musing on “Russian,” she writes: “The cyrillic alphabet is a thing of beauty in and of itself. For years I’ve wanted to warp its text in an artwork. This baking soda came into my hands while sourcing with a client. Colored cardboard under the direct sun gives me the highlights I desire, and the heavy black text is what I’ve been chasing to draw.”
