The artist Alexandra Karamallis was inspired by the symbolism of Persian gardens, and the ways we use walls to curate space. With layers of collage, gouache and watercolor, the artist recreates moments in a garden, working her reflections into the scenery. These works explore how tranquility offers us stability and how walls might be the very thing we need to overcome.

About
Alexandra Karamallis
Alexandra Karamallis is a New York-based artist who earned her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Her Iranian heritage is a central theme of her work. Identifying as a member of the Baha’i Faith-an oppressed minority in Iran-she explores themes including the oppression of women, art and minority faiths within the context of oppressive authoritarian regimes.
