DESCRIPTION
Acrylic paint and water on duck canvas | 2020
While in residency at Hotel June in Los Angeles in October 2020, Culver drew inspiration from her novel environment — a foreign and exciting escape from the day-to-day monotony due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While reflecting on life during an ongoing pandemic coupled with being a new transplant to Los Angeles, these paintings reflect her vulnerability at this time as well as a reawakening. She evolves her signature abstract coral motifs into looser iterations, using a palette that reflects aspects of rage as well as melancholia. Culver writes, “Named after the well known mountain in Brazil, Corcovado, as well as a song by João Gilberto I have loved since my early teenage years, I want to encapsulate the feeling of what these paintings hold with lyrics from the song:
This is where to be
Here with you so close to me
Till the final flicker of life's ember”
