DESCRIPTION
Watercolor on paper | 2020
The theme of the paradise garden — a traditional Persian garden designed to create an intimate and protected space for relaxation — has been a common thread throughout Karamallis’ work. This painting, part of the series, A Protected Space, expands upon this theme in context of the artist’s experience through the COVID-19 pandemic, where, like many others, she sought refuge and sanctuary in gardens, parks, and the outdoors. The works as part of this series highlight Karamallis’ literal and metaphorical personal paradise gardens — the places, spaces, and moments where she found peace, safety, and protection in nature, by recalling joyful memories, and through the loved ones who were with her during this challenging year.
