DESCRIPTION
Acrylic and ground aluminum on wood panel | 2019
Ethan Caflisch’s “morse code” series builds off of an earlier body of work, “i didn’t know you were back in town,” in which he painted sequences of colored shapes to be read as scores or dialogues. Interested in the ways that translation brings new form and weight to language, Caflisch began to introduce morse code onto his canvases. Each painting displays the title of the work itself, communicated through a series of circles, squares, and slashes. In order to create a sense of texture and depth, Caflisch mixed ground aluminum and garnet into the acrylic paint.
