Ink and deboss on hand-dyed paper | 2020

Created during her residency at MacArthur Place in Sonoma, CA, Humphreys was inspired by the natural surroundings of wine country and the warm tones of the property, citing the red clay colors of the Sonoma Overlook trail as a defining moment for her most recent works. In the design of her tiles, Humphreys dwelled on the idea of human connection, and the coming and going felt during travels away, which can be seen in the curves and paths created by her iconic repetition.

“I had in my mind, Agnes Martin and her thoughts on inspiration... She believes that inspiration isn't something that comes and goes; it is there all of the time waiting for us to be untroubled enough to notice... (in other words: present enough to notice). I felt very untroubled at MacArthur Place. I had the space in my mind to soak in the views and nature of Moon Valley.”
