DESCRIPTION
Handwoven cotton | 2018
Coming to terms with the unforgiving body and the sick body, Weiner began weaving images of used medical gauze that she collected after weekly medical treatments. Interested in ideas of control, structure, and the formal play of the grid, these weavings move from large woven drawings to one-to-one representations of these objects. These small, light, and lace-like gauze pads meant to be discarded, through recreation, become solid and permanent, creating a relic. The artist takes an imprint of the human body and makes it clean, and at moments even sterile. How does the stain transform when it is recorded and recreated? How can one shift the narrative of illness to one of healing?
