DESCRIPTION
Watercolor and gouache on paper | 2020
Karamallis is a Brooklyn-based artist who spent two months in quarantine at the outset of the Coronavirus pandemic in Cape Town, South Africa where she travels annually to visit her family. While it was at first unsettling to be stuck indefinitely away from home at a time with so much uncertainty, she used the time as a sort of unplanned artist residency, painting every day and taking inspiration from a place close to her heart.. She has always drawn inspiration from nature, which lockdown made more precious. This body of work is less planned and conceptual than earlier work, as it shows how this pandemic affected the artist, as well as a processing of that which she longed for beyond it.
