DESCRIPTION
Soft pastel, charcoal and watercolor on cotton paper | 2020
Flowing rivers and abstract forms cross paths in Sara Marlowe Hall’s latest series of drawings. Texture is a central principle of the artist’s practice, and these works evoke a sense of physicality even in their two dimensional nature. Handmade cotton paper is the foundation for each drawing—the grain and neutral tones reference the grit of concrete and dirt. Rippling shapes are layered onto the surface with soft pastel, watercolor, and charcoal. Variations of blue represent the fluidity of water, and the surrounding palette conjures up the colors of changing seasons.
