Painter Alyssa Krause plays with the parameters of perception. Interested in the ways in which people recognize images based on visual signifiers, Krause creates abstract compositions that encompass elements of the familiar. Before beginning each painting, she decides on a set of rules to guide the process. This allows her to play the role of both the artist and the viewer—part of her overarching desire to understand the various ways that paintings can be perceived.
