DESCRIPTION

Resin coating on wood panels | 2020

Tadahiro Gunji’s ongoing “Collectivity” series examines the relationship between mother nature and the manmade. Each wall sculpture consists of wood panels coated in vibrantly-colored plastic resin. Some forms are purely abstract, while others draw inspiration directly from the colors of nature and the heads of birds. Gunji views his materials as metaphors; wood represents the natural world, while resin symbolizes capitalism. The sculptures can never truly replicate the natural world, nor can capitalism ever fully exist in harmony with nature.

In recent iterations of the series, Gunji began to translate his abstract forms into mixed media works. The simple yet immersive collages made of paper and cardboard provide an intimate index of Gunji’s process and hand .

About
Tadahiro Gunji

Multi-media artist Tadahiro Gunji's Collectivity series focuses around his use of organic lines formed by gaps between the separate pieces, and acknowledge the existence of invisible boundaries. The gaps also represent the relationship between space and matter; each part of the work trying to remind us of the complexity and composition of all particles. Select public collections include: The Museum of Modern Art (Toyama), Rad Hourani Art Foundation, and Italy Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa.
