Tape and conté crayon on paper | 2017

An atypical subject for Caflisch, these renderings of the American flag consist of six elements: square format paper, graphite for the signature, thin masking tape, 2 inch blue painters tape, and blue and red conté crayons. Made in 2017 during a resurgence of public interest in politics, Caflisch used these studies more so to experiment around iconography and symbolism. During this time in his practice he had begun his work with quilted textile paintings, and the exploration into the flag as form created another permission for him to continue using needle and thread within his work.

Across all disciplines, Caflisch's work explores the beauty of raw materials and is personified by bold linear and organic forms, interspersed by a graphic use of color.
