One of the most traditional subjects in art history has been the portrait, which usually evokes the era of commissioned paintings by wealthy aristocrats in a time before modern photography, and the invention of the selfie. And though the access to seeing one’s self is no longer limited by economic means like that of centuries past, the beauty of the portrait still holds true. In a mirror (or a front-facing camera) we have access to how we see ourselves, but through the eyes of a painter, sculptor or photographer we are subject to how others see us.
