Studio Visit with Annelie Vandendael by Ignant

Born in Belgium and growing up in Southern France, photographer Annelie Vandendael exposes the real nature of her subjects in a series of vibrant images and playful compositions.

Annelie Vandendael says

"I like to work with analogue cameras. It feels more realistic, today it is not obvious to see real images, everything is manipulated and photoshopped."

Acting against the unified approach sometimes observed in fashion photography, Vandendael shows her subjects exactly as they are, letting the authenticity of their bodies speak for themselves.

“I depict the human being rather as a piece of nature than as an object,” Vandendael says. To create her lively imagery, the photographer uses Hasselblad camera, which enables her to achieve the most realistic effect.

About Annelie Vandendael

Annelie Vandendael was born in Belgium and grew up in the South of France. She received her master degree in Photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Genth. After finishing her studies, she was invited to ‘La Fabrica’, the Benetton Communication and Research Center in Treviso, Italy. She was also nominated for the photo academy award in the Netherlands and won the award of the Roorda Agency, Amsterdam. She recently shot for Paul Smith swimwear and Mellow Yellow shoes. Her recent awards include: Selected International Exposure Competition Vogue 2013 New York and award in category fine arts ‘International Photography Awards’ (IPA) contest in Los Angeles. She mostly works with a hasselblad analog camera. "I like to work with analog cameras, It feels more realistic, today it is not obvious to see real images, everything is manipulated and photoshopped. I like to see real people with their imperfections, which is more interesting! I put the human as a piece of nature or an object in my picture. It’s a reaction on a lot of fashion photography in which the personality anyway is not important. And it is precisely therefore that I want to let the authenticity of the body speak for itself, an over manipulated body gives us a wrong perception of reality."
