Q.

Tell us about how you came to be an artist…

A.

I don’t remember ever wanting to do anything else. I grew up around creativity, my dad was a commercial illustrator and painter so I spent a lot of time in his studio.

Q.

Describe your work in three words…

A.

Simple. Precise. Fresh.

Q.

What does your creative process look like?

A.

I take lots of photos in preparation of my work, mostly through the summer, which I refer back to and choose from to curate a series of paintings, each connected to the next in some way. I mix small swatches of the main colours I’ll be using which I pin up to get a feel for the piece and use as reference along the way.

Q.

Simplicity is a fundamental theme in your work. Is this something that you explore outside of your artistic practice as a larger philosophy?

A.

I continue to pare back and discard of the unnecessary in order to calm my chaos.

Q.

You work with pastels in such a unique way. Can you tell us about your process?

A.

I use soft pastel and sponges to mix the colours. It’s a technique I have developed over many years. I like getting to grips with a material – really understanding it and using it in a fresh way.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

"All around me. Traveling is a good source of inspiration. While visiting new places my senses are sharpened so it's easy to notice interesting things."

Q.

Your choice of paper also seems very intentional. What makes it your preferred material?

A.

It's from a mill in Cornwall and made using 100% cotton. It holds pastel beautifully, allowing translucency as well as great depth of colour when needed. I use a very similar cotton paper for my limited edition prints, so they share the same soft matte finish as my originals.

Q.

Light and transparency are represented in a photorealistic way throughout your work. How do you achieve this and why is it important in your practice?

A.

Transparency is so fascinating to paint. It’s a subtle balance, observing the surface and underlying object simultaneously, rendering these layers in absolute harmony to create an atmosphere of tranquility.

Q.

What messages or emotions do you hope to convey to your audience?

A.

Hopefully the viewer will experience the beauty that I felt when creating each piece.

Q.

Are there any quotes or mantras that you particularly connect with?

A.

“We are homesick most for the places we have never known.” - Carson McCullers.

Q.

What makes you laugh?

A.

My Family

Q.

What makes you nervous?

A.

Starting a new painting. I don’t think I will ever lose that nervous feeling I get just before I make my first mark.

Q.

What makes you excited about the future?

A.

I’m excited to see how my work will grow and develop over time. I hope to travel, so that more and more of the world will wander through my studio.
