DESCRIPTION
Vinyl, plastic, acrylic ink, burned paper, and pen on panel | 2021
Alison Cooley’s “Aether” series examines the transience of form in the natural world. From the glowing orange and ochre embers of dying fires to the faded hudes of withering flowers, Cooley pulls her palette from nature’s cycles and a sense of energy settling back into the earth. The “x” in each work’s title symbolizes a variable that’s been lost from one incarnation to the next.
The body of work originated from Cooley’s drawing practice of small sketches on mylar paper, in which she illustrated natural forms and created subtle variations in their shapes and positions. This progressed into a series of atmospheric abstractions made of vinyl, plastic, acrylic ink, and pen on panel or yupo paper. This group of glassy and translucent materials visually represents nature’s ephemerality. In each work, some areas are packed with markings while others are left blank—as if pre-existing forms have departed the composition
