Watercolor, soft pastel and charcoal on cotton rag paper | 2021
The new abstract drawings by Los Angeles artist Sara Marlowe Hall present an expert juxtaposition of hard and soft elements. Crafted during Marlowe Hall’s PADA residence in Barreiro, Portugal, Barreiro Drawing is a series of captured moments from each day when the artist would wander the city and observe the sky change while the stacked city of Lisbon reflected in the river across the way. Rendered in watercolor, soft pastel, and charcoal, the drawings effortlessly bring together those water elements with the sharper industrial edges that so struck Marlowe Hall during her daily walks. By exploring these different elements, Barreiro Drawing encourages the viewer to project their own nostalgia and dreams on each work.
